Open Day
Sunday 6th December 2020

Mayday Hills Art Society Inaugural Open Day last Sunday was a wonderful success with over 300 visitors taking the opportunity to experience the beautifully repurposed education wing of the former mental asylum.

The celebration marked the third year since the Art Society began transforming the two story building from a sad empty shell into a vibrant home for the visual and performing arts, the environmental sciences, and meeting spaces and a film society.

The building now boasts an eighty seat theatre, fourteen art studios, two large exhibition spaces, a workshop area, a comprehensive library and two kitchens, a print room and framing facility, and is home to the Mayday Hills Asylum Collection created by Associate Professors Dr. David Lawrence and Dr. Jennifer Munday.

The day included over 200 works of art featuring the Corona Challenge ‘Art a Day in May’, four short films about the environment by special guest filmmaker, Stephen Curtain, two performances by the MADAS Musos and an auction of donated pre-loved art.

Delicious food was provided by Ha Ha Vegan and Turkish Coffee by Coffee Mayday.

President Christine Cansfield-Smith said that this was the first occasion when Mayday Hills Art Society raised significant funds to permanently secure the building and create a dynamic Regional Centre of Excellence for the Arts and Sciences.

A great success!

1/20
Arty Party
& 2nd birthday celebration

In November 2019 we celebrated the Art Society’s second birthday in the beautiful gardens on a perfect spring day. The brief was to dress in a costume inspired by an artist, a character from a play, a movie or a painting. Artists, thespians and friends created a colourful event with several characters of old coming back to life! A ‘picture frame’ for photographic portraits was an outstanding success with all wanting to have their images permanently recorded.

Sensational entertainment was provided by the Bollywood dancers (Rose Gardner, Christine Cansfield-Smith and Wendy McKay-Taylor). They were led by expert choreographer and Art Society artist Shital Ravel. A photo of the event even appeared on the front page of the Ovens &Murray.
