Theatre & Film

The Art Society is proud of its Upstairs Playhouse that opened in May 2018 and has a seating capacity for 100 guests. Plays and concerts are held regularly in the theatre with the facilities being available for hire. A recent addition is the movie cinema that promises, through the MDHAS Film Club, to encourage interest in film as an art form.

The Mayday Hills Art Society is a member of the Federation of Victorian Film Societies, Inc. As such, film events organised by MDHAS are open to members only; although members can bring guests. There is no charge, although a gold coin donation is appreciated. Tea, coffee, drinks and snacks are available for purchase.

RSVPs essential for each screening.

CINEMA PARADISO

This is one of the most heartwarming films of all time. A great commercial success when it was released in 1988 as much for the film as for Ennio Morricone’s music score.

Set in a small Sicilian town, the film centres around the friendship between a young boy and an aging projectionist who works at the town’s movie theatre. It stars Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Salvatore Cascio and Leopoldo Trieste. Cinema Paradiso won several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Cannes Film Festival's Grand Prix. It was nominated for 11 BAFTA Awards and won five; including Best Actor for Philippe Noiret, Best Supporting Actor for Salvatore Cascio, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Language Film.

Based on the 1985 novel Ardiente paciencia (English translation: Burning Patience) by Antonio Skármeta, itself adapted from a 1983 film written and directed by Skármeta, the film tells a fictional story in which the real life Chilean poet Pablo Neruda forms a friendship with a simple postman (Troisi) who learns to love poetry and, as a result, also finds love.

The cast includes Troisi, Philippe Noiret, and Maria Grazia Cucinotta. The screenplay was adapted by Radford and Troisi. It features beautiful music by Luis Enriquez Bacalov

BREAD AND TULIPS

Bread and Tulips or Pane e tulipani is a 2000 romance comedy  by Italian Director Silvio Soldini. The movie stars Licia Maglietta and Bruno Ganz as Rosalba Barletta and Fernando Girasole.

The film was an official selection at numerous film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival. During a family vacation on a bus tour, a woman is accidentally left behind at a rest stop. She quickly gets tired of waiting for her family to pick her up, so she continues her vacation on her own, in an unplanned quirky journey, wherever it may lead. Random circumstances and chance meetings make for a story of independence, destiny and love.
